Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis

The Holy Figure of our times

Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis
"The first holy figure of our times, an ascetic of the city"

Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis was born on Tuesday, October 1, 1846, in Silivria, Eastern Thrace, to pious and poor parents - Demos (Demosthenes) and Balou (Vasiliki) Kefalas - and was the fifth of their six children. His father came from Ioannina, a sailor by profession, and his mother came from Silyvria.

At his baptism, he was given the name Anastasios. He was taught his first learnings, along with Christian teachings, by his mother.
1853
Anastasios, at the age of just seven, sewed sheets of paper together in order to make books to write God's words on them, as he himself said.
He travels to Athens, eager to learn, but unfortunately circumstances do not help and he is forced to return to Constantinople.

Lumio, previously called Foenix, was a social media analytics company that helped brands like Audi, David Jones and Red Balloon source legitimate influencers for social media campaigns.

“We were essentially the Instagram police and called out fake influencers left, right and centre. It was fun and all, but there is only so many bikini chicks you can look at on Instagram before you start losing your mind.”

Dan, Co-founder and CEO of Lumio

Starting from his hometown, Silyvria, he spent his teenage years in Constantinople.

His first job was in a Greek's tobacco warehouse in Constantinople and in his spare time he studied ancient the Greek writers and the Church Fathers. In order to benefit others spiritually he used to write, on small pieces of paper, what he thought was useful and put them on tobacco packets in the hope that those who bought them would read them.

“After this, we both took up golf on during the week and started eating fancy dinners at the local Country Club... Ha. This is not what happened at all. We suck at golf and love eating Guzman Y Gomez.”

Adam, Co-founder of Lumio

Anastasios arrived in Chios around 1868.

Whilst in Germany, Dan worked with with brands such as Daniel Wellington and BMW - Ja!

Adam worked with clients like Vodafone, TAFE NSW, Adobe and also won the 'Good Design Australia' award for his work on the Seatfrog website.

Anastasios remained in Chios and worked as a secretarial teacher in Lithi, while a little later he joined the New Monastery of Chios as a novice monk.

Whilst in Germany, Dan worked with with brands such as Daniel Wellington and BMW - Ja!

Adam worked with clients like Vodafone, TAFE NSW, Adobe and also won the 'Good Design Australia' award for his work on the Seatfrog website.

In 1876 he became a monk in the New Monastery of Chios by the name of Lazaros.

The name "Relume" is born.

On 15 January 1877 Lazaros was ordained a deacon and named Nektarios by Metropolitan Gregory of Chios, taking over the Secretariat of the Metropolis.

He completed his secondary school studies in Athens and received his diploma from the Varvakeio School, since the earthquake of 1881 prevented him from completing his studies in Chios.

To do this they would have to build a company that would be profitable in its first year. Not the next Uber of *insert clever idea*.

On the day he received his diploma, Nektarios registered at the Theological School of the University of Athens, continuing to receive financial support from the Choremis brothers from Chios, while in the second year of his studies he also received a scholarship from the "Papadakis bequest".
At that time, he served as a deacon in the Church of Agia Irini, in Aeolou street.

“Relume was an opportunity for us to build a profitable business, not a startup that bleeds cash, whilst doing what we love to do. It also allows us to learn about all types of businesses and the problems they deal with. These are all opportunities that we could potentially solve for in the future. For now, our goal is simple, we want to build a kickass business which means we really want our customers and the Webflow community to succeed too.”

In 1884 he had his sermons printed and published in a book entitled «Δέκα Λόγοι Ἐκκλησιαστικοὶ, διὰ τὴν Μεγάλην Τεσσαρακοστήν».

The five-year interlude of Nektarios Kefalas' ministry in the Patriarchate of Alexandria (1885-1890) as an elder and as Metropolitan of Pentapolis is the prelude to his ordeal in Greece. He served the church as a pious and penitent until his selection as director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School on March 1, 1894.

On 15 January 1889 Nektarios was consecrated Bishop of Pentapolis. His activity as Metropolitan was particularly fruitful and that is why he was the main candidate for the patriarchal throne of Alexandria.

In a short time, having the Patriarch's esteem, he ascended all the ranks of the priesthood and assumed particularly important duties. A number of them alarmed several co-bishops who were looking forward to the Patriarchal Throne. It was not long before a plot of slander and humiliation was laid against him, even to the point of his removal from his duties on May 3, 1890.

On February 12, 1891, after numerous excuses for his departure from the priesthood and service, he was appointed preacher in Evia, where he won the congregation with speeches full of pulse and love, followed by days of service to the people and occupation with the writing of theological treatises.

On 28 January, in a document by the political agent of Greece in Egypt, Ioannis Gryparis, information about Agios Nektarios was mentioned in connection with his imminent appointment to the Rizarios. Gryparis states his own estimate that Metropolitan Nektarios was a victim of intrigue and slander.

Thus he confesses the Metropolitan's innocence of the charges brought against him by the patriarchs, which were the cause of his departure from Egypt.

“Relume was an opportunity for us to build a profitable business, not a startup that bleeds cash, whilst doing what we love to do. Nektarios, with his charismatic personality and thanks to his patience, managed to restore peace and harmony within the school. A balance was achieved in the relations between the Ministry and the Council of the School and the interference of the Council in the duties of the Director and the teachers was stopped.

The work of Metropolitan Nektarios in Rizarios was organizational, educational, literary and pedagogical. His pedagogical thinking was unsurpassed. His students described that period as "sacrificial".

He spent his psychosomatic powers in the formation of the souls of the students and in the formation of their clerical consciousness. Through the teaching of the lessons of Christian Ethics, Pastoral and Catechism he was cultivating yet another spirit, that of piety and virtue.

He had great inner tolerance and generosity, vertues with which he managed to correct the immaturities.
He once found himself pleading barefoot, because, while entering the classroom, he saw a poor man who asked him if he could help him to get shoes. Nektarios immediately took off his own and handed them over to the astonishment of all.

1894-1908
Possessed by humanitarian feelings and with the love of Christ and paternal affection, he struggled to succeed in the great work he had undertaken. It is mentioned characteristically, that when a disciple committed a serious misconduct, he considered himself responsible since he had failed in his education.

He tried to overcome every difficulty by praying and fasting.

This had an impact on his students, who usually repented and avoided repeating their missteps. Nektarios did his utmost to preserve the prestige of the Rizarios, without being possessed by vindictiveness and unnecessary severity, while he was also distressed by the imposition of punishments he could not avoid.

The Saint's ardent desire to visit Athos was fulfilled in the summer of 1898, as an expression of his gratitude to the Virgin Mary. To go to Mount Athos, he received the written consent of the Council of the Rizarios and the permission to go and stay from the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

It also allows us to learn about all types of businesses and the problems they deal with. These are all opportunities that we could potentially solve for in the future. For now, our goal is simple, we want to build a kickass business which means we really want our customers and the Webflow community to succeed too.”

Saint Nektarios passed away at the age of 74 on the afternoon of November 8, 1920 and the room in which he was deceased has today been converted into a small temple on the second floor of the Areteion Hospital.

Saint Nektarios was proclaimed "Saint" on April 20, 1961, on the recommendation of the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, evaluating his miracles, his great pastoral and ecclesiastical work.

“Relume was an opportunity for us to build a profitable business, not a startup that bleeds cash, whilst doing what we love to do. The Patriarchate of Alexandria issued a synodal confession "to seek forgiveness from Saint Nectarios for the injustice done to him at the hands of the preceding fathers and brothers of the Patriarchal Throne of Alexandria".
The Saint's relationship with the Patriarchate of Alexandria was very important and "was tested many times".

One hundred and eighty-eight years after his expulsion from Egypt, on 15 January 1998, the Holy Synod decides on the moral restoration of Saint Nektarios and asks for the Saint's forgiveness for the " unjust persecution he suffered ".

Patron Saint

Holy Relics of Saint Nektarios:

The Epitrachelion, the Antiminsion and the Cross of Blessing of the Saint are kept in the Holy Church of St. George.

For the Cross of Blessing on which the Body of the Crucified has cut hands, since the metal had deteriorated from years of use, the Saint himself used to put forward economic reasons in his exhortations for its repair. He even claimed:
" other things have priority, the Lord has patience and waits. After all, we humans took His life, shall we be bothered by His hands?"
