Ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος Πενταπόλεως γεννήθηκε την Τρίτη 1 Οκτωβρίου του 1846 στη Σηλυβρία της Ανατολικής Θράκης από ευσεβείς και φτωχούς γονείς, τους Δήμο (Δημοσθένη) και Μπαλού (Βασιλική) Κεφαλά, και ήταν το πέμπτο από τα έξι παιδιά τους. Ο πατέρας του καταγόταν από τα Ιωάννινα, ναυτικός στο επάγγελμα, και η μητέρα του καταγόταν από την Σηλυβρία.

Κατά την βάπτισή του, του δόθηκε το όνομα Αναστάσιος. Τα πρώτα γράμματα, μαζί με χριστιανικές διδαχές, τα έλαβε από την μητέρα του.

Με αφετηρία τη γενέτειρά του Σηλυβρία, περνά τα χρόνια της εφηβείας του στην Κωνσταντινούπολη.

Η πρώτη του εργασία ήταν σε μια αποθήκη καπνών ενός Έλληνα στην Κων/πολη και τον ελεύθερο χρόνο του μελετούσε αρχαίους Έλληνες συγγραφείς και Πατέρες της εκκλησίας. Για να ωφελήσει πνευματικά και άλλους, συνήθιζε να γράφει σε μικρά χαρτάκια ό,τι θεωρούσε ωφέλιμο και το τοποθετούσε στις συσκευασίες καπνού με την ελπίδα να τα διαβάσουν όσοι τα αγόραζαν.

Η περάτωση των γυμνασιακών του σπουδών γίνεται στην Αθήνα και το απολυτήριό του το παίρνει από τη Βαρβάκειο Σχολή , αφού ο σεισμός του 1881 τον απέτρεψε από την ολοκλήρωση των σπουδών του στη Χίο.

Ο Νεκτάριος τη μέρα που πήρε το απολυτήριό του ενεγράφη στη Θεολογική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών συνεχίζοντας, από το γυμνάσιο ήδη, να λαμβάνει την οικονομική ενίσχυση των αδελφών Χωρέμη από τη Χίο, ενώ στο 2^ο έτος των σπουδών του έλαβε και υποτροφία από του «κληροδοτήματος Παπαδάκη».

Εκείνη την περίοδο υπηρετούσε ως διάκονος στον Ιερό Ναό της Αγίας Ειρήνης, στην Αιόλου.

Η πενταετής παρένθεση της διακονίας του Νεκταρίου Κεφαλά στο Πατριαρχείο Αλεξανδρείας (1885-1890) ως πρεσβυτέρου και ως Μητροπολίτου Πενταπόλεως, αποτελεί το προοίμιο της δοκιμασίας του στην Ελλάδα. Υπηρέτησε την εκκλησία ως εμπερίστατος και πένης, μέχρι της επιλογής του ως διευθυντή της Ριζαρείου Εκκλησιαστικής Σχολής την 1^η Μαρτίου 1894.

Σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα, έχοντας και την εκτίμηση του Πατριάρχη, ανήλθε όλους τους βαθμούς της ιεροσύνης και ανέλαβε ιδιαιτέρως σημαντικά καθήκοντα. Πλήθος αυτών θορύβησαν αρκετούς συνεπισκόπους που απέβλεπαν στον Πατριαρχικό Θρόνο. Δεν άργησε να στηθεί πλεκτάνη συκοφαντίας και ταπείνωσης στο πρόσωπό του, μέχρι και της παύσης από τα καθήκοντά του, στις 3 Μαϊου του 1890.

Στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου του 1891 και μετά από πλήθος δικαιολογιών για την απομάκρυνσή του από την ιερουργία και την προσφορά, διορίζεται ιεροκήρυκας στην Εύβοια, όπου με λόγους γεμάτους παλμό και αγάπη κερδίζει το εκκλησίασμα, ενώ ακολουθούν ημέρες προσφοράς στον λαό και η ενασχόλησή του με την συγγραφή θεολογικών πραγματειών.

Στις 28 Ιανουαρίου σε έγγραφο του πολιτικού πράκτορος της Ελλάδας στην Αίγυπτο, Ιωάννη Γρυπάρη, αναφέρονται πληροφορίες για τον Άγιο Νεκτάριο με αφορμή τον επικείμενο διορισμό του στη Ριζάρειο. Ο Γρυπάρης αναγράφει τη δική του εκτίμηση κατά την οποία ο Μητροπολίτης Νεκτάριος υπήρξε θύμα ραδιουργίας και συκοφαντίας.

Έτσι ομολογεί την αθωότητα του Μητροπολίτου ως προς τις κατηγορίες που του απήγγειλαν οι πατριαρχικοί και υπήρξαν η αιτία της αναχωρήσεώς του από την Αίγυπτο.

Η περίοδος 1894-1908 υπήρξε καθοριστικής σημασίας και ιδιαίτερα σημαντική τόσο στη ζωή του Αγίου Νεκταρίου, όσο και στην πορεία της Ριζαρείου Εκκλησιαστικής Σχολής.

Στον διορισμό του Μητροπολίτου Νεκταρίου στην Ρ.Ε.Σ. συνέβαλε ο τότε μητροπολίτης Αθηνών Γερμανός Καλλιγάς.

Ο ίδιος δαπανούσε τις ψυχοσωματικές του δυνάμεις στη διάπλαση των ψυχών των ιεροσπουδαστών και στη διαμόρφωση της ιερατικής τους συνείδησης. Μέσω της διδασκαλίας των μαθημάτων της Χριστιανικής Ηθικής, της Ποιμαντικής και της Κατηχήσεως εκόμιζε ένα άλλο πνεύμα, αυτό της ευσέβειας και της αρετής.

Είχε μεγάλη εσωτερική ανεκτικότητα και μεγαλοψυχία, με τις οποίες κατόρθωνε να διορθώνει τις ανωριμότητες.

Κάποτε βρέθηκε ξυπόλητος να αγορεύει, διότι εισερχόμενος στην αίθουσα διδασκαλίας είδε έναν φτωχό ο οποίος τον παρεκάλεσε αν μπορούσε να τον βοηθήσει ώστε να αποκτήσει παπούτσια. Ο Νεκτάριος αμέσως έβγαλε τα δικά του και τα παρέδωσε προς κατάπληξη των πάντων.

Διακατεχόταν από αισθήματα ανθρωπιστικά και με αγάπη Χριστού και πατρικὴ στοργή πάλευε για να πετύχει στο σπουδαίο έργο που είχε αναλάβει. Χαρακτηριστικά αναφέρεται πως όταν ένας μαθητὴς έκανε κάποιο σοβαρὸ παράπτωμα, εκείνος θεωρούσε πως ήταν υπεύθυνος αφού δεν τα κατάφερε στη διαπαιδαγώγησή του.

Με προσευχή και νηστεία προσπαθούσε να ξεπεράσει κάθε δυσκολία, ενώ τον έθλιβε ιδιαίτερα η επιβολή ποινών που δεν μπορούσε να αποφύγει.

Αυτό είχε αντίκτυπο στους μαθητές του, οι οποίοι συνήθως μεταμελούνταν και απέφευγαν να επαναλάβουν τα ατοπήματά τους. Ο Πενταπόλεως έκανε τα πάντα για να διαφυλάξει το κύρος της Ριζαρείου, χωρίς να διακατέχεται από εκδικητικότητα και αχρείαστη αυστηρότητα.

Ο διακαής πόθος του Αγίου να επισκεφθεί τον Άθω εκπληρώθηκε το καλοκαίρι του 1898, ως έκφραση ευγνωμοσύνης του προς την Θεοτόκο. Για τη μετάβασή του στο Άγιον Όρος έλαβε την έγγραφη συγκατάθεση του Συμβουλίου της Ριζαρείου και την άδεια μετάβασης και παραμονής από το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο.

Ο Άγιος επισκέφθηκε τις περισσότερες Μονές αποζητώντας την εσωτερική μόνωση και την πνευματική εμπειρία, όπως και ο ίδιος έλεγε, μέσω των συναναστροφών του με τους ασκητές.

Στο Άγιον Όρος συνδέθηκε πνευματικώς με ενάρετους Αγιορείτες Πατέρες. Εμφανής υπήρξε η επίδραση που του άσκησε ο Άθως.

Η δράση της Ριζαρείου υπέρ του Μακεδονικού Αγώνα προσδιορίζεται περί τον Δεκέμβριο του 1899 και η προσωπική γνωριμία του Αγίου με τον Μητροπολίτη Καστοριάς Γερμανό Καραβαγγέλη συμβάλλει καθοριστικά σε αυτήν.

Ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος αποστέλλει επιστολή προς τον Πατριάρχη Φώτιο ζητώντας απόδοση δικαιοσύνης (μετά την απομάκρυνσή του από την Αίγυπτο) και διακανονισμό της θέσεώς του, ώστε να αναγνωρισθεί ως κανονικός αρχιερέας του Αλεξανδρινού Θρόνου.

Στις 7 Φεβρουαρίου ο Πενταπόλεως Νεκτάριος, με επιστολή του προς το Συμβούλιο της Ριζαρείου, αιτιολογεί την παραίτησή του εξαιτίας του φιλάσθενου χαρακτήρα του και της κόπωσης στην οποία υπεβάλλετο κατά την εκτέλεση των καθηκόντων του.

« Λαμβάνω τὴν τιμὴ νὰ γνωρίσω εἰς τὸ σεβ. Συμβούλιον τῆς Σχολῆς, ὄτι διαπονηθεὶς τὸ σῶμα καὶ ὑποκύπτων συνεχῶς εἰς ἀσθενείας, αἰσθάνομαι ἐμαυτὸν ἀνίσχυρον νὰ φέρω τὰ τῆς διευθύνσεως τῆς Σχολῆς σπουδαῖα καθήκοντα, διὸ καὶ προάγομαι μετὰ πολλῆς λύπης νὰ δηλώσω Ὑμῖν ὅτι παραιτοῦμαι τῆς διευθύνσεως τῆς Σχολῆς καὶ εὔχομαι ἀπὸ καρδίας, ὅπως ὁ Θεὸς Ὑμᾶς μὲν εὐλογῇ, ἐργαζομένους ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ, τὴν δε Σχολήν, τὴν ὁποίαν ἠγάπησα ἀπὸ μέσης καρδίας, σκέπῃ καὶ προάγῃ πρὸς ἐκπλήρωσιν τοῦ ὑψηλοῦ αὐτῆς σκοποῦ, δι’ ὃν ἱδρύθη ὑπὸ τῶν ἀοιδίμων αὐτῆς ἱδρυτῶν, ὧν αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη. Το Πάσχα του 1908 γίνεται πανηγυρική υποδοχή του Πενταπόλεως στην Αίγινα. Ήταν 62 ετών και με αρκετά προβλήματα υγείας, τα οποία δεν τον εμπόδισαν όμως από την άσκηση των πνευματικών του καθηκόντων.

Γράφει αρκετά συγγράμματα, κυρίως βοηθητικά του θείου κηρύγματος.

Η ταπεινοφροσύνη του και η φιλανθρωπία του υπήρξαν παροιμιώδεις.

Στις 9 Μαΐου αποστέλλεται επιστολή/πρόσκληση προς τον Άγιο Νεκτάριο για να συμμετάσχει στους εορτασμούς της 75ετηρίδος από την ίδρυση της Ριζαρείου, στην οποία και δεν ανταποκρίθηκε για λόγους υγείας.

Στις 2 Ιανουαρίου 1920, και ενώ άρχιζε να διαισθάνεται ότι η εκδημία του δε θα αργούσε, συνέταξε τη διαθήκη του.

Ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος αφήνει όλη την πνευματική και υλική περιουσία του στο Μοναστήρι.

Ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος εκοιμήθη σε ηλικία 74 ετών το απόγευμα της 8ης Νοεμβρίου του 1920 ενώ το δωμάτιο στο οποίο εκοιμήθη έχει σήμερα μετατραπεί σε μικρό ναό στον δεύτερο όροφο του Αρεταιείου νοσοκομείου.

Ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος ανακηρύσσεται “ Άγιος” στις 20 Απριλίου του έτους 1961 με εισήγηση του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη Αθηναγόρα, αξιολογώντας τα θαύματα και το μεγάλο ποιμαντικό και εκκλησιαστικό του έργο.

Το Πατριαρχείο Αλεξανδρείας εξέδωσε Συνοδικὴ διαγνώμη «πρὸς ἐκζήτησιν συγχωρήσεως παρὰ τοῦ Ἁγίου Νεκταρίου διὰ τὴν γενομένην εἰς αὐτὸν ἀδικίαν ὑπὸ τῶν προαπελθόντων πατέρων καὶ ἀδελφῶν τοῦ Πατριαρχικοῦ θρόνου Ἀλεξανδρείας».

Η σχέση του Αγίου με το Πατριαρχείο Αλεξανδρείας υπήρξε πολυκύμαντη και “εδοκιμάσθην πολλάκις”.

Εκατόν οκτώ έτη μετά την αποπομπή του από την Αίγυπτο, με ημερομηνία 15 Ιανουαρίου 1998, αποφασίζεται από την Ιερά Σύνοδο η ηθική αποκατάσταση του Αγίου Νεκταρίου και ζητείται η συγχώρεση του Αγίου για τον “αναίτιο διωγμό που υπέστη”.
